As we lay together after, just touching and being close. The conversation turned philosophical. “Do you ever wonder,” she said “how you’ll know when you’ve met the one?”

“Nah,” I said “I’ll know”

“How will you know?”

“When I look in her eyes, I’ll see utter awesomeness. I’ll see how she looks back at me, and it will be nothing but love. She will be comfortable with me in her most vulnerable moments. She will cry in my arms when she’s weak. She will comfort me when I have sorrows.

She will laugh at my dumb jokes, and be silly with me when we’re old. When she wants to play the ‘ten names of people you can have a free pass’ game, her name will be the one I write ten times, and when she shows me her list, it will ten times have mine.

She will be the one I want to see first thing in the morning, no make up to hide her beauty, exposed flaws and all. She will be the one I want to fall asleep in the arms of every night for the rest of my life.

The one will sit on the roof with me, she’ll watch the perfect sunset, stay up with me all night, laughing, playing, talking and in the morning, she’ll turn with me and watch the sun rise. The one will ask where the time went and we’ll both know it was time well spent. She will share my hopes and my dreams. The one will stare adoringly in my eyes and give me strength when I’m unsure of myself.

I will know she’s the one, because those nights, when I’m out with the boys, drinking, playing pool, or cards.. I’ll wish I was with her. I’ll know because when she calls my cell and I see her name pop up, my heart will race. I’ll always answer that call. I’ll know when I hear her voice and feel at home. I’ll know.

The one is the one who will treat me like a prince. She’ll do all this for me, because I will do all of this for her. She will be my princess, and more. I will sacrifice everything, for her. That is how I will know.”

When I finished speaking there was a moment of complete silence. She turned to me a little and inhaled like she was going to speak. I put my finger on her lips and whispered “Shhh. Let me admire your eyes, and the utter awesomeness I see within them.”

Amazing 3D Latte Art by Kazuki Yamoto

You don‘t even have to love coffee in order to appreciate these super creative latte foam artworks by Japanese artist Kazuki Yamamoto. And we‘re not talking about the little smiley faces or flat palm tree patterns: this 26-year old latte artist, based in Osaka, creates actual 3D foam sculptures in the coffee mugs of the Cafe10g visitors. This thinking outside the box – or, rather – outside the cup – even gave Kazuki the idea to make the coffee foam climb out of one cup and reach for another. That way you might be served with a cup of coffee where a cat is trying to get into another one next to it, where tiny fish are swimming.

Besides these meticulous 3D sculptures, Kazuki also does some amazing flat latte art. His subjects vary from manga and video game characters to portraits of such people as Albert Einstein or John Lennon. Kazuki says his dream is to open up a his own cafe in Tokyo one day. The questions I am often asked about my career tend to concentrate not on how one learns to code but how a woman does.

Let me separate the two words and begin with what it means to become a programmer.

The first requirement for programming is a passion for the work, a deep need to probe the mysterious space between human thoughts and what a machine can understand; between human desires and how machines might satisfy them.

The second requirement is a high tolerance for failure. Programming is the art of algorithm design and the craft of debugging errant code.

Now to the “woman” question.

I broke into the ranks of computing in the early 1980s, when women were just starting to poke their shoulder pads through crowds of men. There was no legal protection against “hostile environments for women.” I endured a client — a sweaty man with pendulous earlobes — who stroked my back as I worked to fix his system. At any moment I expected him to snap my bra. I considered installing a small software bomb but understood, right then, what was more important to me than revenge: the desire to create good systems.

I had a boss who said flatly, “I hate to hire all you girls but you’re too damned smart.” By “all” he meant three but, at the time, it was rare to find even one woman in a well-placed technical position. At a meeting, he kept interrupting me to say, “Gee, you sure have pretty hair.” By then I realized he was teaching me a great deal about computing. It would be a complicated professional relationship, in which his occasional need for male dominance would surface.

So, on that day of my pretty hair, I leaned to one side and said, “I’m just going to let that nonsense fly over my shoulder.” The meeting went on. We discussed the principles of relational databases, which later led me to explore deeper reaches of programming, closer to operating systems and networks, where I would find my real passion for the work. My leaning to one side, not confronting him, letting him be the flawed man he was, changed the direction of my technical life.

So my mom and I have been working the same waitress job for 5-6 years now. She had been waitressing years before, but this is recently. Anyway, about… 15 minutes ago this guy she waited on left and told her to take care. Just that. Prior to this she had talked to him about Italy. Her people are from Florence, this and that, and she said she’s never been. She’s got 8 years of art education and she’s working a waitress job. It’s pretty… Sad and disappointing, I guess. Her and my father divorced 6 years ago and she hasn’t had a real job ever. Just been stuck in a small town she’s not from.

This man who we have never seen before tipped her 1000 dollars for a trip to Italy. Walked out, not another word.

…you know. Just when I start to lose faith in humanity….Hm.

See? This is what I can see money can do. Money can bring happiness to others. It’s not in the having the money, but giving to people who will enjoy experiences and enjoy life. Do I want to give people financial riches or spiritual ones? Can I give both? Can I understand things to be one way while simultaneously making things another way? We are still in this world; is this not an act of love and charity?
